On March 24, I bought my very last pair of Brooks Ghost 4′s. I took them to Boston with me, and they carried me through the 26.2 mile 85+ degree Boston Marathon (I finished) .
They ran the Seattle Color Run, and are permanently colored to remind me how much fun that run was (read just how fun here).
These shoes are the most special shoes I have ever owned, but they’re toast.
I wanted the purple Ghost 5′s, which sold out of my size immediately.
LH (my life hostage AKA my boyfriend) really wanted the yellow men’s, but his were also sold out in his size.
We really, really tried to wait, but we couldn’t wait any longer. We each needed a new pair of shoes desperately. One last 20 mile run reminded me how badly I needed new tread. I felt like I had no support between my feet and the concrete (how do the barefoot runners do it)!?
So, I went with second best, the blue Ghost 5′s.
They looked pretty similar to the Ghost 4′s I owned, but I was still pretty dang excited to run in the shoes.
And LH went with the blue and (GASP) white.
On June 8th, my first pair of Brooks Ghost 5′s arrived. At first glance, they look nearly identical to the Ghost 4′s, but they are different and better (and cleaner). I am in love.
The first differences I noticed even before I even put them on:
- Tongue is a bit longer/thicker
- Beefier tread on soles
The new full length caterpillar crash pad provides support for both heel and mid-foot strikers. It’s only on the heel of the 4′s, which only provided great support for heel strikers.
The Ghost 5′s are 1/2 oz. lighter than the Ghost 4′s. (the men’s are a full ounce lighter)
Once I stepped my feet in, I realized I liked the thicker tongue, and I really, really liked the beefier tread!
When I ran, this is what I noticed:
- More room in toe-box (a great feature for me since I am prone to black toenails even though I run a full size larger than my street shoe)
- More cushioning in soles
So far, I am thoroughly pleased with the new Ghost 5′s, as I knew I would be. Brooks, you just keep getting better and better.
We both love our Ghost 5′s.
Our feet are happy.
And now that our first choice colors are finally available in our size, we’ll order the cool colors and look even cooler…I mean run even faster.
Is the color of your running shoe important to you?
